The Skinny about Hulu

Hulu is a website that offers commercial-supported streaming video of TV shows and movies from NBC, FOX, ABC and many other networks and studios. Hulu videos are currently offered only to users in the United States. Hulu provides video in Flash video format, including many films and shows that are available in 360p and the considered high definition format of 480p. Hulu also provides web syndication services for other websites including AOL, MSN, MySpace, Facebook, Yahoo!, and Comcast's
Hulu is a joint venture of NBC Universal (GE), Fox Entertainment Group (News Corp) and ABC Inc. (The Walt Disney Company), with funding by Providence Equity Partners, which made a US$100 million equity investment and holds a 19% stake.

Awesome concept, but is it really free?

For starters, Hulu features free, ad-supported content, and all you need is a decent Internet hookup and a browser. An episode of The Office, for example, includes two 15-second ads and a 30-second commercial in the middle. The site does not require any kind of download service, credit card number, or separate device (or ''client'') for access. ''They've found a way to make it a premium-advertising environment, so you'll generally see the full episodes with significantly less commercials,'' says Scheppach. ''Advertisers like that because then you remember the commercials that are there. iTunes is successful, but I think consumers are wanting this content for free.''

So... What the heck is a "Hulu" anyway?

Hulu means many things to many people. To some, it’s a great online resource for watching their favorite TV shows and movies. But to a native Hawaiian, it means “hair.” To someone who speaks Swahili, it means “cease.” To an Indonesian, it means “butt.” While these translations are accurate, the folks behind naming were inspired by a couple of Mandarin Chinese definitions instead – “interactive recording” and “a hollowed-out gourd used to hold precious things.” Despite this often misunderstood word, the website is rapidly becoming one of the biggest names in streaming video. Well, except in Indonesia…

So I believe everything I see on TV; is Hulu a plot to destroy the world?...
